YC Reader

Look up Y Combinator companies and batches from the public yc-oss dataset: profiles, batch rosters, companies by industry or tag, top companies, and who is hiring. Read-only, no login.

⚠️ **Finance warning / Avertissement finance** : informational only, not investment advice. YC portfolio data describes startups, most of them private, illiquid and likely to fail: a hiring badge or a top-company label is a growth signal in a dataset, not an investment case, there is a real risk of loss in any venture decision taken from directory data, and no output here is a promise of return. Curated by Skill Harbor: the Y Combinator reader of himself65/finance-skills. Use it for startup and venture research that draws on YC data: company profiles, batch rosters (winter, spring, summer and fall batches back to 2005), companies by industry or by tag, the top companies list, the companies currently hiring (roughly 1,400 in the dataset the skill describes, a growth signal worth tracking), non-profits, founder-diversity lists, and overall YC statistics. The data comes from the yc-oss/api project, an unofficial open-source API that indexes all publicly launched YC companies from YC's own search index and refreshes daily as static JSON files, so it is read-only by construction, with no write operations at all and no authentication: the skill fetches endpoints with curl and filters them client-side with jq. Results are summarized rather than dumped: name, one-liner, batch, team size, status, hiring status and website per company, and aggregate counts and distributions for research questions. From the himself65/finance-skills repository (MIT). Honest caveats: this is an unofficial mirror of public YC data, refreshed daily rather than in real time, so verify anything decisive on Y Combinator's own site; the full all-companies endpoint is large (roughly 5,700 companies) and the skill steers you to the narrower batch, industry and tag endpoints first. Skill Harbor never reviews the code, review it yourself before use.

How to check a build before installing →

Use "YC Reader" with your Muse. Prerequisites: curl and jq on your machine (both pre-installed on most systems; the skill gives the install commands if jq is missing). No account, no login and no API key are involved: the yc-oss dataset is public static JSON refreshed daily. This skill is READ-ONLY by construction: the API serves files and offers no write operations at all. Informational only, not investment advice, and there is a real risk of loss in any venture decision taken from directory data. 1. Open the skill: https://github.com/himself65/finance-skills/blob/main/plugins/social-readers/skills/yc-reader/SKILL.md and copy the full SKILL.md text. 2. Paste it into a chat with Muse and add: "Look this up in the YC data: use the narrowest endpoint that fits (batch, industry, tag, top or hiring), filter with jq, and present the companies with name, one-liner, batch, team size, status, hiring status and website." 3. Check meta.json first when a batch, industry or tag name returns a 404: it lists every valid name. Tip: avoid the all-companies endpoint unless you truly need the full set; it is roughly 5,700 companies and the specific endpoints answer faster. Safety: a skill is plain-text instructions; it runs nothing by itself. Read-only public data, no account involved. Informational only, not investment advice.

Questions

How do I install a build?

Every product page includes a copy-paste install prompt. Paste it into your Muse and it sets the build up for you — no manual configuration.

Where does my money go?

Straight to the seller. Skill Harbor never processes payments: checkout happens on the seller’s own page, usually Stripe.

What does the ✓ next to a creator’s name mean?

It means we confirmed the identity of the person behind the listing. It says nothing about the code itself — always check a build before installing it.
