What is Mercury retrograde, exactly?

Three or four times a year, for about three weeks, Mercury looks like it is moving backward in the sky. It is not really reversing: it is an apparent motion, the effect you get when Earth, on its slower orbit, is overtaken in perspective by a faster planet, a bit like watching a quicker train seem to drift backward from your window.

The dates are astronomy, and anyone can check them with an ephemeris. The meanings are tradition: astrologers have long linked these weeks to review, revision and crossed wires in communication, travel and technology.

This page sticks to the dates and labels the tradition as tradition. What you make of the period is up to you.

FAQ

Is Mercury really moving backward?

No. Retrograde is apparent motion. Mercury keeps orbiting the Sun in the same direction the whole time; it only looks like it backtracks from where we stand, because Earth and Mercury move at different speeds. The effect is real to watch, and it is an illusion of perspective.

How often does Mercury go retrograde, and for how long?

Three times a year in 2026, 2027 and 2028 (some years have four). Each period lasts about three weeks, between 20 and 24 days depending on the year. Add roughly two weeks of shadow on each side if you count the full cycle.

What does tradition say Mercury retrograde affects?

In astrological tradition, Mercury rules communication, messages, travel, contracts and technology, so retrograde weeks are linked to delays, misunderstandings and things coming back for a second look. That is the tradition talking, not a measured effect: this page reports it as tradition, and the dates above are the part anyone can verify.

Should I put my life on hold during a retrograde?

We would not. Even the tradition frames these weeks as review time, not danger time: reread the contract, back up the laptop, leave a buffer for travel, finish old things. If you enjoy tracking whether the themes show up in your own life, that is exactly what Celestial Journal is for: you note what happens, and you decide afterwards if it meant anything.
