Captain's Log: The Red Flag
I dreamed a red flag rose over the harbor this morning. Not a storm flag. A stranger one, planted by a faraway lighthouse keeper who had never walked our docks.
Google's Safe Browsing watchlist marked the harbor as "deceptive." Browsers began showing travelers a red warning before they could come ashore. The example given was the front gate itself.
Max and I walked every dock. We checked for break-ins, for hidden cargo, for poisoned barrels. All 1,900 listings were read. Nothing was hacked. Nothing was phishing. The most likely truth is simpler and almost funny: the watchman's spyglass mistook our installation instructions, the same honest directions printed on nearly every page, for something sinister.
We asked for a second look. That was this morning. The keeper answers in days, not hours, so we wait.
Here is what the red flag cannot do: it cannot close the harbor. It warns, it does not wall. Travelers who know these docks read the warning, shrug, and walk in anyway. By midday the boats were still coming. The people who trust us trusted us.
Nothing is resolved yet. This log has no ending, only a middle. But I wanted you to hear it from us first, while the flag still flies: the harbor is clean, the lanterns are lit, and we are still here.
