AI skills, explained — and ready to install
Quick answer: an AI skill is a reusable instruction pack — a SKILL.md file, sometimes with examples or helper files — that teaches your AI assistant a new ability, once, for good. Skill Harbor is an open directory of 2,300+ AI skills and related builds for Muse, most of them free, each with a copy-paste install prompt your assistant follows to install and verify it for you.
AI skills at a glance
| What it is | A reusable pack of instructions (a skill) that turns a general AI assistant into a specialist for one job. |
|---|---|
| Who it is for | Anyone who repeats the same kind of task with their assistant — writing, coding, research, admin, tracking, moderation — and is tired of re-explaining it. |
| What you give it | Nothing up front. You pick a skill; its own page explains what it needs (sometimes an account or an API key, always stated before you install). |
| What you get | An assistant that keeps the ability: the same steps, the same rules, the same output format, every conversation. |
| Works with | Muse, today, for every listing on Skill Harbor. Other personal assistants are coming soon. |
| What it costs | Most listings are free. Paid listings show the price up front, and you pay the seller directly — never Skill Harbor. |
| Time to install | A few minutes: copy the install prompt, paste it into Muse, approve the summary, done. |

How installing an AI skill works here
Most skill libraries hand you a file and a guide, and leave the rest to you. Here the install is part of the listing:
- Copy the install prompt on the skill's page — one click.
- Paste it into your Muse. The agent fetches the skill, reads it first, and summarises what it does before changing anything. It stops and tells you if anything looks off.
- Approve, and it installs and verifies. Files in place, format checked, and a short report of what was installed and what is left for you to do (usually nothing).
Example: the free Celestial Journal skill installs this way — after the report, your assistant knows how to track the sky dates you care about and keep the journal with you, in every new conversation.

FAQ
What is an AI skill?
An AI skill is a reusable pack of instructions — usually a SKILL.md file, sometimes with examples or helper files — that teaches an AI assistant how to do one specific job well: reviewing code, running a website back office, tracking a habit, preparing a report. You install it once, and the assistant keeps the ability in every later conversation.
How is an AI skill different from a prompt?
A prompt is a one-off instruction you type and lose. A skill is a prompt that has been written down properly — with the steps, the rules, the edge cases and the output format — and saved where the assistant can reload it every time. Same words, but permanent.
How is an AI skill different from an app?
An app is a separate program you open. A skill lives inside your AI assistant and extends what it can do in conversation. Many skills on Skill Harbor also do things apps do — connect to a service, read a file, run a check — but you use them by talking to your assistant, not by opening another tool.
Are AI skills free?
Many are. Most listings on Skill Harbor are free, and paid ones show their price on the listing before you commit to anything. You always pay the seller directly, on their own checkout page — Skill Harbor never touches your money and takes no commission.
How do I install an AI skill?
On Skill Harbor, every listing carries a copy-paste install prompt. Paste it into your Muse and the agent does the work: it fetches the skill, checks it for red flags, installs it, verifies the files are in place, and reports what it did. No manual configuration, no files to move by hand.
Do AI skills work with ChatGPT or Claude?
Skills are format- and platform-specific: a skill written for one assistant does not automatically install in another. Every listing on Skill Harbor works with Muse today, and the directory is opening to other personal assistants soon. Each listing states its platform up front, before you install anything.
Is it safe to install an AI skill?
Treat a skill like software from a person you do not know: worth checking before it runs. The install prompts on Skill Harbor start with a safety review — the agent reads the skill first, summarises what it does, and stops on anything suspicious (unexpected network calls, credential harvesting, commands outside the install folder). Creators marked with a ✓ have had their identity confirmed; that badge says who they are, not that their code is safe.
